Obtaining A Copy Of Constitution Of India

The Constitution Of India is a written document, that establishes the principles based on which India is to be governed. I have read the preamble of our constitution and it sets certain lofty ideals for all of us to follow. This got me interested and I wanted to read the whole document. Towards this end I was looking to obtain a copy of Constitution of India in a book form.

I visited the Government of India official website for the constitution to check how to obtain a copy. My first observation was that we will not be able to download a copy of the constitution as a single document. If you want to have a complete local copy, you will have to download many small HTML pages. This is very inconvenient.

Another fact is that only HTML formats are available. Check this against the number of formats in which you can obtain the GNU Emacs Manual. Why cannot we have the Constitution of India available in various formats?

And the CD containing the Constitution of India costs a little more than INR 500/-. Check this information here

CD-ROM on Constitution of India

A CD on Constitution of India has been released on 21st December,1999 by Hon’ble Minister of Law, Justice and Company Affairs. This CD is available at a nominal charge of Rs. 515.00 and can be ordered from NIC Services Inc. The details can be had from : The Executive Director, NICSI, First Floor, A-Block, CGO Complex, New Delhi – 110 003. E-Mail : nicsi@hub.nic.in

Why would a digital copy of our constitution cost so much? If they charge that much for a hard copy (book form) of the Indian Constitution I can understand? But why is the soft copy so costly?

Finally, there is no mention of a printed edition of Constitution of India. Is it out of print? Infact, this is one more reason why a single downloadable copy of our constitution, that is printer friendly, must be available for all of us.

I am mailing this small piece to Legal Informatics Division, who maintains the above official site. Let me see what they have to say. If you are interested enough, then you can also mail them at the above address.

    I understand your predicament.

However, it is far better to create a solution than to cry about the problem. So, please make a complete copy for yourself…. and share it with others.

If you need a ready made copy, e-mail me, with “Constitution of India” as the subject line, I’ll mail you one.

    Take care…

    Be positive,
    Gopal

I was pointing out the fact that a government department is charging more than necessary to obtain a copy of the Constitution of India, among other things.

Now we can download Constitution of India from http://www.india.gov.in in PDF format for free! But still it is not a single PDF file.

While I can do it myself, I think it is the duty of our government to provide the Constitution of India free of cost to all its citizens. This is possible if they distribute a soft copy of the same.

The Constitution of India is available in .doc (MS Word) format from the Indian Ministry of Law website, the link is http://lawmin.nic.in/coi.htm

For some reason, I could not find a print copy of just the Constitution; private publishers only seem to publish the Constitution with some sort of analysis included. Reasons of copyright, perhaps?

What will be the mean of real democracy in our country when the educated people will not have a free hand over the constitution of their own country ?

On the contrary the Govt. must make every effort possible to make the people read and understand it.

  24. Nirmal Sirur,Age 16 Says:

    Citizens,
i came to this site specifcally to download a copy of the Indian Constitution or even get to read the entire one briefly
After reading all yor comments i have noticed a viewer mentioning
the constitution should be distributed to masses
but let me remind you our population is in millions and each constitution book is what 900 to 1000+ pages i guess
    appx.
and as a sate that is developing i think that might be a bit too much dont u think
although i agree the book in hardcopy should be available in most bookstores and the softcopy should be available freely
but the fact of the CD is the same as mass production
    itl be too expensive
and i really think only a few of us (ENTIRE COUNTRY) will pay attention to it
except for a few like us and law students so basically it is our damn f#$@in right to read that constitution and to demand a free copy of it (only guys pay for the transport charges).
    Yours truly
    Nirmal Sirur

  42. MG MORE Says:

National Book trust of India or Govt Publication deptt must supply copies of Constitution of India to any body on demand with nominal cost. I want to know who can supply the same. It is the duty of Govt of India, rather President of India to make a resolution to give free copy of Indian Constitution to all College going student, or at the time giving degree certificates to students. It is a practice in UK and USA why not in India?

  43. Manik More Says:

Getting a copy of Constitution of India is a right of all voters. Will our MPs think on this and make resolution to this effect? When all our so called leaders come to our door for begging votes, we must ask them to come with copy of Indian Constitution. If they don’t provide the basic right of people we must not vote them.

At least, i will believe, the constitution of india as our greatest epic .I request the concerned people to make it availlable to common people in this country. The simpler way is to make it to chant every day in all the temples during the worship of god.
